What is the difference between Mounjaro and Ozempic?
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a dual agonist that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Ozempic contains semaglutide, which acts on the GLP-1 receptor only. Both are once-weekly injections and both slow digestion and reduce appetite — the dual mechanism is what appears to give tirzepatide a modest edge in average weight loss.
They also differ in what they're licensed for in India: Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes, at a maximum dose of 2.0 mg weekly. Mounjaro is prescribed for weight management as well as diabetes. Neither is a weight-loss product you should be comparing on a pharmacy shelf — this is a clinical decision. See who is eligible for GLP-1 treatment.
Mounjaro vs Wegovy: how do they compare for weight loss?
This is the more relevant comparison if weight loss, not diabetes, is your goal — Wegovy is the semaglutide product actually licensed for weight management, at up to 2.4 mg weekly. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, tirzepatide (15 mg) produced up to ~20.9% average body-weight loss over 72 weeks. In STEP 1, semaglutide 2.4 mg produced about 15% over 68 weeks.
A 2025 head-to-head trial, SURMOUNT-5, compared tirzepatide directly against semaglutide in the same population and confirmed tirzepatide's advantage — the first trial designed specifically to answer this question rather than comparing across separate studies.
Tirzepatide vs semaglutide: which molecule actually works better?
On trial evidence, tirzepatide produces somewhat greater average weight loss than semaglutide, and SURMOUNT-5 backs that up head-to-head. But “better” on a trial average doesn't mean better for you specifically — individual response varies considerably, and side-effect tolerance often matters more day to day than the trial-average percentage.
Side effects overlap heavily: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation with both, usually worst early and after each dose increase, and eased by slow titration. Both carry a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumours and a small increased risk of gallbladder disease and pancreatitis — a clinician needs to screen your history before prescribing either.
Rybelsus vs Ozempic: does the tablet work as well as the injection?
Rybelsus is semaglutide as a once-daily tablet, up to 14 mg — the same molecule as Ozempic and Wegovy, in a different delivery form. It has to be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water and nothing else for 30 minutes, because oral absorption of semaglutide is poor otherwise.
For most people the injectable forms remain the more practical and more studied route for weight management specifically, but Rybelsus is a genuine option for people who want to avoid injections altogether — discuss it with your doctor rather than assuming the tablet is automatically the easier or weaker choice.
Wegovy vs Ozempic in India: which one should you actually ask for?
Wegovy and Ozempic are the same molecule, semaglutide, made by the same manufacturer. Ozempic is dosed to a maximum of 2.0 mg weekly for diabetes; Wegovy goes to 2.4 mg weekly for weight management — the dose the weight-loss trials were actually built on. If weight loss is your goal, asking for Ozempic specifically usually means asking for the wrong product at the wrong dose.

Generic semaglutide vs Ozempic in India: is cheaper just as good?
Since semaglutide's Indian patent expired on 20 March 2026, more than 40 generic versions have launched at a fraction of the older branded price, and branded prices have come down in response (current prices are on our semaglutide in India page, which we keep updated). Approved generics contain the same molecule and must meet the same regulatory standards, so effectiveness is comparable; what changes is cost, not the drug.
The one thing that doesn't change: it's still a Schedule H prescription medicine. Avoid any seller offering “compounded” or unapproved semaglutide without a prescription — you can't verify the molecule or dose behind it. See semaglutide in India: generics & price.
So which should you choose — Mounjaro or Ozempic/Wegovy?
If maximum average weight loss is the priority and budget allows, tirzepatide (Mounjaro) has the edge in trials. If affordability matters most, generic semaglutide now delivers strong results at a fraction of the cost. Neither answer is universal — your doctor weighs your BMI, existing conditions, tolerance and goals before recommending either.

Both molecules are Schedule H prescription medicines in India, dispensed only against a valid prescription. Cost isn't shown here because it changes frequently — see /mounjaro-india and /semaglutide-india for current, indicative pricing.
For most patients the question isn't 'which is stronger' — it's which one they'll tolerate and stay consistent with for 12–18 months. Adherence beats theoretical potency.
